In a mighty battle this evening between the most dominant athletes in the sport, Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl emphatically added Individual Olympic Dressage gold to the team title she helped secure yesterday with the fabulous mare TSF Dalera in the Individual Freestyle finale at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Baji Koen Equestrian Park.

The tension was excruciating for the new champion as she had to watch compatriot and longtime legend Isabell Werth follow her into the ring with Bella Rose. They may be team-mates but their rivalry was palpable during last night’s press conference, but tonight once again it was von Bredow-Werndl who posted the biggest score when putting a massive 91.732 on the board.

Werth produced another of her trademark punchy and entertaining performances to take silver with 89.657, and bronze went to 2016 Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin from Great Britain whose result was nothing short of extraordinary. Competing the completely inexperienced 10-year-old Gio she produced an incredible mark of 88.543 to push Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour and Bohemian off the third step of the podium.
