During CHIO Rotterdam, equine surgeon Carmelo Magri will present on Friday, June 19 an informative lecture on a topic that every horse owner may face sooner or later: equine emergencies and injuries. In his presentation, Equine Emergencies: Why Anatomy Matters, he explains why understanding basic equine anatomy can make a crucial difference when an accident occurs.

Carmelo is a specialist in equine surgery and a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS). In his daily work, he performs a wide range of procedures, from elective orthopedic surgeries to complex emergency operations. After studying in Belgium and France, he worked in several equine clinics in both Belgium and the Netherlands. He currently works as a surgeon at Dierenartsenpraktijk Bodegraven.

Throughout his career, Carmelo has seen many cases where what appeared to be a minor wound turned into a serious problem. Many horse owners do not realize that even a small injury can be located dangerously close to vital structures such as tendons, joints, or blood vessels. As a result, an injury may be far more serious than it first appears.

In this lecture, Carmelo explains in an accessible way how knowledge of equine anatomy can help horse owners recognize potentially dangerous injuries. Using practical examples, he will highlight what to look for and which warning signs indicate that immediate veterinary attention may be required.

Visitors will not only learn how to assess wounds and injuries, but also what they can do in the critical moments before a veterinarian arrives. The lecture provides practical knowledge that can make a real difference in an emergency situation.

According to Carmelo, emergencies can happen at any time. That is why it is so important to be prepared and to recognize when an injury may be more serious than it seems. His key message is simple: understanding the basics of equine anatomy helps you recognize potentially life-threatening injuries more quickly and enables you to provide better care for your horse when every minute counts.

This lecture will be presented in English and can be attended on Friday, June 19 at 6:30 PM in the Stroodorp.
