Alan Wade Returns as Course Designer for CHIO Rotterdam 2027
None other than Irish master architect Alan Wade will design the courses at CHIO Rotterdam in 2027. As the officially appointed course designer for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, he brings world-class expertise to the Kralingse Bos next year offering a unique opportunity for the global showjumping elite.
Exclusive Dress Rehearsal for Los Angeles 2028
With the Longines League of Nations™ positioned right in the middle of the calendar, Rotterdam in 2027 will be a pivotal moment in the season. Riders setting their sights on Olympic gold in 2028 will get a rare and valuable first glimpse into the philosophy of the man who will set the tracks in Los Angeles.
Sporting Director Yves Houtackers is extremely happy to welcome the Irish course designer: “That is great news for CHIO and all the competitors, because Rotterdam is the only place where riders can jump a course built by Alan Wade prior to LA.”
“Rotterdam Breathes History, Tradition, and Atmosphere”
For Alan Wade, returning to Rotterdam feels like coming home. His connection with CHIO goes back a long way: “I was already in Rotterdam back when it was still jumped on grass and Linda Allen was the course designer, around the turn of the century. Later, I returned in 2018 as course designer and in 2019 as FEI Technical Delegate during the European Championship.”
Taking center stage once again in the Rotterdam arena fills him with enthusiasm: “CHIO Rotterdam is among the absolute top events in the world. It’s a show steeped in rich history and tradition. The stadium has an incredible atmosphere, the footing is good quality and the fences are fantastic. On top of that, the Longines League of Nations™ is a crucial series. Positioned right in the middle of that calendar, Rotterdam is a key milestone for the riders and their teams.”
Fair Sport and Horse Welfare First
Throughout his impressive career, Alan Wade has designed the most prestigious classes across the globe. Wherever he builds, he stays true to his signature style: “I like variety, but I never stray from my own style. My courses consist of simple flowing lines, keeping the tests in full view of the horse and athlete at all times and still provide top level sport. The most important thing for me is that riders finish their rounds with healthy, happy horses that leave the ring feeling good.”
He already has his eyes on the iconic Rotterdam fences. From the famous ship wall to the distinctive Markthal vertical, Wade knows exactly how to weave Rotterdam's identity into his technical lines.
Reconnecting with Familiar Friends
Beyond the sporting challenge, Wade is especially looking forward to collaborating with the team and volunteers in the Kralingse Bos: “The team in Rotterdam consists of exceptionally friendly and experienced people. It’s a well-oiled machine that I thoroughly enjoy working with. Plus, I am great friends with Louis Konickx. It’s going to be a fantastic reunion.”
