The medals of the Longines FEI European Championships Jumping, Dressage and Para Dressage are divided. The riders, horses and other team members have arrived home safely and can look back on an exciting event. But when you organize such a big event, you need more stakeholders. We asked the new general director of Rotterdam Topsport, Peter Blangé how he experienced the Longines FEI European Championships Jumping, Dressage and Para Dressage.

Peter Blangé is speaking. He used to play volleyball at a top level, but since September 1st he is the new director of Rotterdam Topsport. “My first real acquaintance with Rotterdam as a top sport city was in the early '90s when I played the World League Volleyball in Rotterdam Ahoy. During that period the volleyball program was growing, and we played more and more in large arenas. So, in that respect I have a 30 years legacy in Rotterdam.”

“In my new role as director of Rotterdam Topsport, the EC’s were my first official event. I have experienced a wonderful event in the Kralingse Bos. Because my daughter has been riding since she was seven, I have developed an above average interest in equestrian sport. Fortunately, the weather was good, so it also produced very nice pictures of beautiful top sport.”

More than just top sport

“Outstanding were the unique setting of the entire event in the forest of Kralingen, with the Grandstand and a world class Rotterdam Arena. It is very special that we had Jumping, Dressage and Para Dressage in one event. It is good to see that there is strong involvement from sponsors and the business community. The great variety of side events also made the event more than just top sports. This will make it more widely visible and accessible for the people of Rotterdam.”

Make it happen

The three championships were not of great importance for the competitors, but also for the City of Rotterdam. “It was the biggest equestrian event ever for Rotterdam. Rotterdam already has a beautiful history with 70 CHIO Rotterdam editions and now an even bigger international tournament was added. With this event, and certainly how it was carried out, you put Rotterdam in the top of the international sports rankings. In addition to Dressage and Jumping, it was deliberately chosen to add Para Dressage to this program. In that respect, this event fits in seamlessly with the ‘Make-it-Happen’ idea of Rotterdam.”

Various components

“The CHIO Rotterdam is and remains one of the most beautiful equestrian sport events in the Netherlands. The history and tradition around this event makes it one of the icons at the Rotterdam top sports calendar. I am already looking forward to the 75th edition, a major milestone for the organization and for Rotterdam. In addition, given the history, that we can expect many beautiful editions.”

I want to compliment the organization on how the event is organized and what they have put down that week. In addition, I am really looking forward to the next edition and I encourage people to come and see the beautiful different disciplines of the equestrian top sport," concludes Director of Top Sport Rotterdam Peter Blangé.
